I'm not a big fan of giving special treatment to woman in FOSS - after all, the whole goal is that they should feel just as accepted as men. However, an initiative like this DOES give some publicity, and makes clear we, as in the FOSS community, appreciate woman and are willing to go an extra step to get them involved. Which is why, after all, I DO support the initiative from Google.Jos Poortvliethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05243886270488333877noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12366865.post-26562362377795243822010-05-03T05:08:31.882+02:002010-05-03T05:08:31.882+02:00So if youre a woman student, you get paid to atten...So if youre a woman student, you get paid to attend?

Sorry but that's BS and will do nothing to get more women interested.

A financial grant is useful to ALL students, not just women.
Discrimanting against men wont get more women interested in FLOSS and is no better than the quota systems.

The male student who cant afford to go to a conference is getting discriminated against but discrimination against some is always tolerable for some people.

Is there a lack of women in FLOSS? Yes.
Should we encourage more women to take part? Yes.
Cash rewards arent the way to do it. At least not this way.
We are all equal but some more than ohers is never the right way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
